Can it really have been six months since we’ve drank our weary hearts through Napa Valley? That is far too long ago, the mere thought of this makes me cry inside, for there is nothing like driving down Silverado Trail in Autumn.
As we’ve been to Napa half a dozen times we decided that this Winesday we would share a few of the vineyards we visited.

- Our Favorite : Envy Bee Bee’s Blend 2011 $45
“Ruby color with a touch of violet. On the nose the aromas are delicate and interweaving, bringing in dusky smoky aromas, redcurrants, Moroccan spices and a touch of game. On the palate this elegant expression of Cabernet and Merlot brings in currants, stewed rhubarb and an array of exotic spices such as anise, cardamom and saffron. The well rounded tannin’s make the wine immediately accessible, with or without food. The complexity from the blend ensures the drinker satisfaction from each sip.”
Larkmead Vineyard, 1100 Larkmead Ln, Calistoga, CA 94515
- This winery does tastings by appointment only and booking a few weeks in advance is advisable.
- Through a close friend we had the enjoyment of private tasting on the terrace. The view, winery, and tasting room itself are all magnificent.
- Our Favorite : 2011 Larkmead Tocai Friulano
(We begged and pleaded to be able to purchase this, they have a small production so they had already pre-sold all of their wine to their wine membership club but they graciously let us buy three bottles from their tasting cellar inventory.)
“Our 2011 old vine Tocai is a subtle and elegantly floral wine that should be enjoyed this summer and fall 2012, while it’s at its most fresh and vibrant. Wild flowers, bright grapefruit and citrus zest aromas combine with fragrant green herbs, lemongrass and grassy freshness. The palate offers an intriguing interplay between sweet and savory elements. Crisp apple, fresh melon and sweeter citrus oil combine with delicate flint, fennel and other savory herbal flavors. Lovely fresh sea spray and iodine notes add complexity to the variety’s telltale gentle floral, anise, quinine edge. An oily, waxy texture develops in the glass but the finish is sleek, focused and pure.”
Schramsberg Vineyards, 1400 Schramsberg Rd, Calistoga, CA 94515
- Mainly Produces Sparkling Wine in the style of French Champagne
- Cave Tasting & Tour Fee: $50 per person
- Our Favorite : 2011 Blanc de Blancs $38
“The 2011 Blanc de Blancs has fresh aromas of green apple, pear, grapefruit and lime zest. The fruitful nose is complemented by developed nuances of “fresh from the oven” bread and candied citrus. Generous flavors of grapefruit, lime and pineapple are present in this wine. The palate is crisp on entry with a long, tangy and refreshing acidity.”
